Bank of Montreal Portfolio Work

Flash to HTML5 Display Ad Refresh 2014-2018, rich media, UI/UX, dynamic banners, motion graphics, branding, web pages, and social media.

Most Complex Experience

Tasked to transition and refresh BMO Display Ads from Flash to HTML5 and beyond.

With the announcement that Google would severely limit/remove the Flash web browser plugin (.swf), the industry standard for display ads was forced to adapt to HTML5 Canvas. Bank of Montreal needed a full display ad refresh for all of its many services and promotions. I was a lead designer rapidly producing hundreds of polished HTML5 banner ads, rich media, UI/UX, web pages, motion graphics, videos, and social media ads. Though I helped make the transition to the new industry standard seem easy, I admit it was difficult to learn to adapt so fast. I committed to learning and applying skills outside my original role, like custom JavaScript code, 8+ new design/development programs, and Google Dynamic Display Ads. I step up to the plate when it comes to excercising my creative design arsenal. This complex experience gave me the confidence to jump feet first into new territory, and trust my skills and team around me to overcome big changes to the design/development process.

Most Memorable Experience

Tasked to create a static BMO Billboard advertisement for: BMO Field facing Gardiner Expressway in Toronto, the Game Marquee Scoreboard, and Ricoh Coliseum/Coca-Cola Coliseum.

With 150 000 + viewers a day, it's crucial that the layout is optimized for its display. The user experience is essential considering the special ad viewing experience, specifically of the billboard near the Gardiner Expressway highway. The difficulties associated with this specific viewing experience, such as distance/angle from display, and reading from a moving vehicle prompted me to consider new layout options to strengthen the brand and its objectives rather than limit my capabilities to outdated design layouts/brand guidelines. So, while I created and presented exactly the design request BMO expected, I had the initiative to present an alternative solution that would stand-up for good design and the user experience. The design specifically maximized the text area, size, weight, and digital colour contrast with the layout of all other elements simplified to emphasize the message. After making my case, BMO agreed to go forward with my insightful new design and furthermore included it as another standard brand template for BMO billboards. Sometimes a simple design project can have big impressions. Almost 4 years later and I still see my BMO billboard design template used all across Toronto/GTA for various BMO ads.
